Walt Whitman composed this poem about one of the most significant events and turning points in American history. Beyond an explanation of the subject matter, vocabulary, and the structure of the poem, students will identify Bend-Your-Ear Devices such as alliteration, consonance, and repetition, and Dress-Up Devices such as extended metaphors. For the second class, students will be encouraged to compose their own elegy. The second class will include a study of the more modern elegy "In Flanders Field" by John McCrae as well as elegies by Oliver Goldsmith, W.H. Auden, and Ben Jonson.
