Students will be taught how to read, understand, compare, & contrast poems and poets (and occasionally songs and songwriters) from different eras of poetry in this ongoing class. Each class meeting will consist of reading two poems. After reading each poem, we will: 1. discuss the historical context of the pair of poems. 2. go over a brief biography of the poets. 3. note the poetic devices used in each poem. 4. learn about the poetry movements featured in that day's class meeting. I will use slides to go over the poems, the poets, and the historical relevance of each poem. Video clips may be used when applicable. I encourage students to share their thoughts and to ask questions. I enjoy having interactions during our class meetings. To truly understand a poem, a reader should know something about the poet and the era in which the poem was written. I believe in encouraging students to get the "whole picture" when it comes to literature, poetry, and history. By comparing and contrasting pairs of poems from different eras, this goal will be met. I teach Literature, Writing, Poetry, Mythology, and Folklore classes for Middle and High School. I also teach a small selection of classes for elementary-aged students and preschoolers.
I have a BS in Elementary Education and a MA in English. I taught in the public school system for seven years. After having my third child, I chose not to return to my teaching position. This decision is what put us on the path toward homeschooling. I began homeschooling in 2006, and my last homeschooled child graduated in May 2021. My youngest child currently attends a local school designed for neurodivergent and disabled students.
I am the author of the book Mountains and Melancholy: A Collection of Poetry, and I am also a former author of one of the health blogs at HealthyPlace.com. I am a teacher member of the Folger Shakespeare Library.
I see myself as a partner in the student's learning process. I believe in student/teacher collaboration. I desire to ignite a fire within students so that they yearn for more rather than try to stuff them with facts that they will forget the minute they walk out the door or close the laptop. I see learning as a lifelong adventure, and I teach in a way that reflects that belief.
I have one dog and one cat. My dog is named after a Lord of the Rings character: Gandalf. My cat's name is Freyr (like the Norse god.) I love fall and Halloween, and all the things that come with them: cool temperatures, crisp air, vibrantly colored leaves, pumpkin spice, warm cider, dressing in costumes, trick-or-treating, and decorating my house -- I even have a Halloween tree. I am usually seen with coffee in one hand and a book in the other. Now you know a bit about me. I look forward to meeting you in one of my classes soon.
