Are you ready for the 5th Zoey and Sassafras book, The Pod and the Bog? It took me a bit longer to create this class but it is worth it! Get ready for exceptional new activities that will deepen our understanding of the book, stretch our imaginations, and investigate the science in the book. Plus, a Zoey and Sassafras Science and Book Club would not be complete without a grand finale 4th class. What will we do? We will start each class with an open discussion of the chapters you read before our meeting. Every meeting will have a specific topic that we will explore through science, art, and writing. I made an agenda for you to check out below. I hope you join Pip and me as we leap into The Pod and the Bog. (You know Zoey and Sassafras will be there too.) 

Each week I will provide a summary of the upcoming meeting and any supplies needed for that meeting. 

Day 1: Paint a Clay Pot with a Touch of Magic Art Day
We will paint a clay pot or two with a touch of pod magic. Wait until you see it glow! During the 2nd meeting, we will plant seeds in our clay pot.

Art is very individual and so is the amount of time needed. I have extra arty projects planned. If we do not get to the extra activities, I will share the ideas on the class page. Since Pip is back, we can make an origami frog. We can use our leftover magic paint to make pods out of marbles or wooden beads. 

Day 2: Egghead Experiment Day
For the first time, the scientists will come up with their very own scientific question and experiment based on the book and the supplies  collected. The scientists will plant cress or grass seeds in empty egg shells. We will decorate the egg shells with Sharpie Markers to make them eggstra special. From there we will dive into the scientific method as I guide students to form their very own experiment. 

Day 3: Scientific Investigation and Bog Journals
Our scientists will investigate virtual bogs to find out about different bog plants, flowers, and animals. I will provide a printable booklet prior to class. Just like Zoey, we will use our Bog Journals to keep track of our findings. We will use our imaginations and knowledge to create our very own magical living things from a bog.

Day 4: Grand Finale-Game Day
First we will start with a game of Bog Bingo with the help of our Bog Journals! Next, we will enjoy some impromptu acting using characters and scenes found in the book. Finally, we will play a game of Baamboozle filled with book trivia. The prizes will be fake but the fun will be real. 

Students will read approximately 3 chapters a week outside of class. This club is based on learning activities and celebrating literature more than reading comprehension. We take topics from the book and expand our knowledge. We use our imaginations and enjoy being with peers that have a common interest. Students need a copy of the book. Participants may read the book independently or families are welcome to read the book as a family read aloud. Audiobooks can be found online also. It doesn't matter how the student "reads" the book as long as they are learning and enjoying what is inside the covers.
