To begin class the students will review how to use a place value chart to represent numbers. We will learn the vocabulary word equation and review digit, number, groups and value. We will then jump into learning how to add big numbers! The students will use their place value charts to draw or use manipulatives to represent the numbers in the addition problem. We will then learn how to quickly count the drawings or manipulatives to find the answer and write the answer properly in the equation. After we have mastered this skill we will move on to adding numbers with regrouping. We will review how to regroup a single number first. Then we will practice adding with regrouping.

Common Core 2nd grade standards. We will also be reviewing 1st grade standards.(1st grade standards are similar but they do 2 digit numbers instead of 3 digit numbers.)

2.NBT.6 Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
2.NBT.7 Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Math is my favorite subject, but as a child I had such a hard time understanding. The teachers went way to fast and I was never able to catch up. I taught 1st grade math for a year and 2nd grade math for 6 years. By the end of the year all .... well MOST of my students also loved math.When you teach with passion it fills your students will passion also!
