I am very excited to offer this class! I have been waiting a while to add it and feel like now is the right time! In this class students will learn about fact vs opinion, persuasive writing and techniques to help convince readers that their opinion is the best. Next we will learn about debating and compare successful debate techniques to the writing techniques. This will be a very interactive class. Students will spend time working together to create strong arguments for a group assignment. Students will be given topics and opinions to defend in class. Students will defend their arguments against their peers counter argument. As a final assignment, students will work individually on a persuasive essay on a topic of their choosing. The last week of this class will be dedicated to one on one meetings with the teacher to assist in the writing assignment. Sample Schedule: Week 1: * Fact vs. Opinion Lesson * Intro to persuasion and persuasive writing * Students will analyze written examples of persuasive essays * Persuasive essay assigned and topics approved (due last class) Week 2: * Intro to debate- what is it exactly? * Structure and Skills of debating * Video examples of debates * Analyze the video debates, which side was more successful Week 3: (Classes with kids under 12 years old will not do an essay) * Invention/ “Sell Me That” * Test * Individual or Group Debate (depending on class size) * Essays Due Weeks 4-6: * Various activities featuring 1-1 and group debates * Students can bring their own topics to discuss I have designed this class to give students time in between lessons to gather their research and prepare their cases! I am open to other schedules if you want to add an additional section, but recommend at least one day between classes. Thanks! Hi! My name is Kathy and I live in Southern California. I love working with students all around the World and of all different ages. I mainly teach classes that are Language Arts based (reading, writing, spelling, and grammar). I also teach about Historical figures, especially if I can tie them into Literature. I also love teaching about animals, and doing story time for the younger kids.
I have been teaching for over 15 years. I have taught in traditional school settings, charter schools, home schooled my own children, and taught online. I have a BA in English as well as a K-12 Teaching Credential. I am very passionate about helping people learn to love reading and writing. I also love to help people that need a little extra help with spelling and grammar. It makes me so proud and happy to have a student tell me how much they think they are improving or to get answers correct on something they missed before.
My approach to teaching is interactive and hands on. I want my students to learn while having fun. I ask a lot of comprehension questions, group work, pair work, and projects (depending on the class). I try to do as much of the work in class as possible so that kids can still be kids once they are done.
My background is in English but I love History and Science too (especially the experiments). It wouldn't be unusual in one of my classes to have to make something that just pops into my mind because it seems fun. I love animals, chocolate, and all things Disney!評論
