Overview
This class is designed based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, providing structured, sequential, and multi-sensory reading instruction that is especially beneficial for students with dyslexia. Focusing on a k/1 grade reading level, the class is open to students in grades 1 through 3.  With a small class size, I will provide individualized support to ensure each student is engaged and successful.n

Schedule
Meeting Times: Once per week.

Class Structure

 Introduction to Spelling Pattern
-Explicitly teach and explain the spelling pattern.
-Practice reading new words with the spelling pattern. 
-Practice spelling a few of the words.
-Practice reading the words in a sentence.

Homework: Practice reading the words, spelling the words, and reading the provided passage. 


Homework: Minimal - read and write words daily

Skills Focus
Short Vowel Sounds: At the beginning, we will focus on reviewing short vowel sounds as they are an essential part of reading. 
Consonant Diagraphs: We will focus on blends such as ch, th
Syllable Division: Breaking words into manageable parts.
Spelling Patterns: Understanding and applying rules.
Vocabulary: Learning meanings of new words.
Reading Practice: Fluency and comprehension through reading sentences and passages.

Additional Notes
The order of skills is not sequential; they are mixed each week for variety and reinforcement.
Higher-performing students will benefit from reviewing previously learned skills.
Lower-performing students will gain exposure to more challenging content.

Games and interactive activities will be used to reinforce learning in a fun way.
This class aims to create a supportive and engaging environment where every student can improve their reading skills through structured, multi-sensory learning.

Week of 7/15 - short a and short i (words like jam, dab, Kim and Jim)
Week of 7/22 - short o (Bob, mop, gob) and short u (bug, jug, rug)
Week of 7/30 - th (work on sight words the, a , is, to and words like thin, Seth, path, moth.)
Week of Aug/6 - No class
week of 8/12 - ch (chin, chat, chip, chop)
Week of 9/3 - short e (ed, red, wet, yes, beg)
Week of 8/26 - sh (ship, shut, fish, mash)
Week of 9/3 - wh (whim, wham, whisk, whiff)
Week of 9/16 - closed syllable 
Week of 9/23 - floss rule ( buzz, jazz, fuzz)
Week of 9/30 - initial L blends bl, cl, fl (blob, blot, clog, clip, flap)
Week of 10/7 - initial s blends ( scab, smell, snap, step)

Through regular practice, students will enhance their reading fluency and comprehension by reading sentences and passages that incorporate new vocabulary and spelling patterns. This goal focuses on building the ability to read smoothly.
Students will learn to recognize and apply common spelling patterns, including consonant digraphs (such as "ch" and "th"). They will practice reading and spelling words with these patterns, improving their ability to decode.

Hi, I'm Rachel Capes! 🌟

I have an Early Childhood Degree and a Master's in Literacy. I spent 12 amazing years teaching 4th and 5th graders, and Kindergarten SPED in public schools. I even got to be a math and literacy coach!

Now, I homeschool my four wonderful kids. One is gifted, two are right where they should be, and one has a learning disability. This time at home has given me a deeper understanding of all learning styles.

I believe learning should be hands-on and fun! Kids should be excited about math and reading.

In math, we use manipulatives, drawing, and algorithms to make learning engaging. When we meet more than once, kids get to share how they solved problems and explain their thinking.

In reading, we dive into books, discuss vocabulary, explore literary elements, analyze characters and plots, and make predictions. Everyone gets to share their thoughts and opinions while respecting others'.

I love to read, be outdoors with my kids, and this year we're learning to garden together. 🌱

I also teach World History and Geography at an accredited homeschool group.
