Fall in love with the magic of storytelling! This creative writing class is all about imagination. We'll write together in class and share our work, responding to fun and unusual prompts. There might be zombies, time travelers, or Bat Man's grandparents. Talking animals or centaurs may make an appearance—it is up to you. The goal is to strengthen our storytelling skills and generate new material. Do you love graphic novels? Then bring something to draw on/with and respond to the prompts with pictures as well as words. These prompts are designed to work for learners who have a current story in progress, or for young writers who are starting out fresh. We'll discuss some fundamentals of storytelling: Character Development Plot Tension The Story Arc Vivid Descriptions Great beginnings Satisfying Endings Every class will have a short lesson, time to free write, and an opportunity to share and comment on each other's work. Learners will be introduced to the careful art of constructive, positive feedback with the goal of supporting each other as we develop and refine our skills.

By the end of the 5-week class, students will have learned about story arcs, vibrant details, how to flesh out a story and add depth and vibrancy.

What is storytelling anyway?
During our first session we will introduce ourselves and establish a quick class contract. We will go over what makes a good story, including an overview of story arc, tension, character development and world building. Of course we will also do some writing! 60 分鐘線上直播課

Dialog and Action!
We will discuss writing a riveting scene, and the overuse of adverbs and cliché. We will write out some action scenes and share them with each other. 60 分鐘線上直播課

Writing Vibrant Descriptions!
We’ll discuss expanding descriptions, and when to dial it back. We’ll respond to fun prompts to strengthen our skills. 60 分鐘線上直播課

Character Development!

I teach various creative writing classes to middle school and high school students. I am a published author of four books: two for children and two for adults. I hold a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from West Virginia Wesleyan College. I've presented at writing conferences across the country and have taught creative writing electives in both physical schools and online programs.
We need stories now more than ever. My goal is to help you unlock the stories inside your head and get them down for the world to read. Reading allows us to travel all over the world (and beyond) without leaving the house. When you create your own stories, you are never bored or alone--your characters are always beside you, keeping you company. I think creative writing classes should be creative, too--thus the name! I incorporate games and interesting visuals into my lessons to make them fun as well as educational.
In addition to having two kids, I have two cats. Grunion is a fluffy Maine Coon looking creature who weighs close to 20 pounds. He was born in my friend's garage to feral parents. He is named for a grunion fish, which is the only kind of fish (that I know about anyway) that walks on land.
My second cat, Anna Conda, was rescued from a hoarding situation. Although she is full-grown, she is tiny, and only weighs 6 pounds. It seemed fitting to name her after one of the largest snakes on the planet. Sometimes she likes to Zoom-bomb my classes.
