Television, newspaper, radio, and online -- the news industry is one that is constantly evolving. Media is put under a microscope, criticized, praised, and misunderstood. In this one-time lesson, we are going to look at exactly what the media is and why they are so important to the dynamic of the United States. Key points we will discuss: -Roles the media to inform, serve as a watchdog, represent the public, and entertain -The ways we consume news -The difference between local and cable news stations -Positions at a news television station -Challenges and benefits of working in news -Why people decide to work in the news industry The class will include a slide presentation with key information and discussion between teacher and students about their perception of the news media. It will also include statements from real journalists about why they chose this career and why they choose to remain, despite the criticism and challenges they face.

I spent a decade studying and working in the broadcast journalism field. I have worked with a variety of news professionals in multiple cities and markets across the country. During my hiatus from Outschool, I was working as the Morning Executive Producer for 40/29 News, the local ABC/CW affiliate where I live.
