Many students know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; but when faced with a word problem, they may not know which math function to use to find the answer. In this class, several strategies will be explored. Not only will we discover the code words that mean to add, subtract, multiply, or divide; but we will also see what to do when there are no code words, or when there is extraneous information, or when the numbers are so big it's hard to understand. Most of the problems we do together will be very simple in order to build confidence, but the principles will translate into much more difficult problems.

My goal for your learners is to help them build confidence when faced with a word problem. We will explore several strategies from finding code words and identifying the action to focusing on what is really being asked and doing multi-step problems. The climax will be when they write their own problems because that will mean they truly understand.其他詳情
