Learners will find out about and use estimation methods for products of mixed numbers in the form of intervals, such as "the answer is between 15 and 24," and use this method to work mixed number application problems on topics like baking and gardening. The method will be represented visually, using rectangles, as well as in the form of a rounding-based algorithm. If learners are interested in exact answers, as class wraps up Avrila will demonstrate extending the rectangular representation method to give an exact answer. Learners need to already be proficient with whole number single-digit multiplication. Instant recall of all multiplication facts is not needed, but they're expected to be able to take a moment and figure it out. At parents' discretion, learners who struggle with multiplication facts can use a chart or calculator. These methods will also work with mixed numbers where a whole number part is multi-digit, such as 12 1/2 * 3 1/4, but we will stick with single-digit whole numbers in class so learners who are not ready to use multi-digit multiplication as a step can fully participate.

TeacherMade is a site designed for school use which allows learners to access worksheets, tutorials, and practice problems. If they wish, such as for added privacy, learners can sign in using a nickname or pseudonym.
Explain Everything is a shared whiteboard, similar to Google Jamboard but more flexible. Learners do not need an account and can access the board to write on it through a link. Learners who do not specifically want to write on the board don’t need to access Explain Everything at all – I will share the screen in Zoom and they can watch.

Something to write on and something to write with. Graph paper would be handy for drawing rectangles on — printed out or made by drawing vertical lines onto lined notebook paper will be good enough. If you can't get graph paper, that's OK; just label your rectangles carefully. Parents can also let learners use any other tools they usually would use for multiplication, like a chart, calculator, or counters.
