Class Experience

There's a lot of gold in this pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! For four weeks, we will explore melodic direction and contour through singing, movement, vocal explorations, instruments, and will even begin to explore methods of notation. We'll be listening to a variety of instruments and will be dancing with the leprechauns.

Classes will be designed so that children can participate without the help of a grown up, although you're always welcome to hang out in the wings and help your child out as needed. I am specifically designing this class for our youngest learners. We will begin by greeting every child by name during our hello song, and from there we will travel on a musical adventure that uses the elements above to connect the class together in a continuous movement and music adventure.

Week One. Rainbows All Around (high and low sounds)
Week Two. The Pot of Gold (melodic direction)
Week Three. Leprechauns Are Hiding! (steady beat and inhibitory control)
Week Four. Finding Hidden Treasures (vocal exploration)

My teaching style is conversational, collaborative, and creative. I love when learners bring their own ideas for movement and song to class and will consciously seek their input. Learners are encouraged to share their ideas and interact with one another. Most music will be live, although some recorded music may also be used. Occasionally, pictures and video clips will be shared to give young learners a point of reference.

No prior knowledge is necessary. Classes will build on one another, and families are encouraged to work the songs, movement activities, and fingerplays into their week. Learners who cannot mute and unmute themselves should have a grown up nearby to help, as we will be on mute when we are all singing. Please see the supply list for instructions for building your own instrument kit with traditional or handmade instruments made from things you can find around your home. If additional one-time materials are needed, they will be listed and shared in the online classroom.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Children will be moving throughout class. Please make sure they have a clear space for dancing and responding physically to music.
Supply List
Please create your own music kit. I suggest you store it altogether in a basket or reusable bag.
Each week, you will need the following:
* rhythm sticks or something to use as rhythm sticks, such as two unsharpened pencils, two wooden spoons, or two dowel rods
* a lightweight scarf, baby blanket, playsilk, etc for movement and peek-a-boo games
* a drum or something to use as a drum, such as a plastic container or cardboard box. No mallets needed, as we'll be using our hands
* shakers or rattles, such as egg shakers, baby rattles, or plastic water bottles filled with rice and sealed carefully
* some sort of bell for jingling
* any other instruments you wish to have on hand for play-alongs
External Resources
