課堂經歷

This is a music history course, but don't worry---it's not dry or boring! We will discover the music of the baroque period (1600-1750) through a variety of fun, engaging activities. Students will learn about the culture, composers, and instruments of the time, and will hear music of Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi.

Week One--- "A Trip to Europe": The baroque period will be introduced by a virtual trip to Europe, where we'll observe baroque style, and then make connections with baroque music. Students will learn about the style and characteristics of this music, learn about Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi, and hear examples of their music.

Week Two--- "Student Detectives": Using the musical knowledge they learned in week one, students will investigate and solve a mystery! This entire class period will be an immersive game where the students work together as a team. The game will be similar to digital "escape rooms" where the students solve puzzles and riddles to gain clues that help them solve the mystery.

Week Three--- "Guided Listening": Students will listen to several masterpieces of this time period while working on creative responses to the music, such as drawing and writing. They will have opportunities to share their work and their thoughts about the music.

Week four--- "A Baroque Celebration": Students will create accessories to wear to a baroque-era masquerade ball (a mask and a tri-corner hat), using materials that they likely already have (see supply list). They will learn a baroque dance, and we will attend a short masked ball together featuring baroque music.

Through my teaching, I strive to encourage a love and knowledge of music that will be valuable to the student for a lifetime! I enjoy sharing the vivid beauty and excitement of music, and helping students explore new sounds and masterpieces that open up new worlds of music to them.

I have taught music history & theory, music appreciation, piano lessons, and other music courses from preschoolers to adults, over the past 15 years. I currently teach piano lessons, and music courses at a community college.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance, and a Master of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy. My main instrument is the piano, but I also play the harp for fun, and I'm teaching myself to play the banjo. In my spare time, I enjoy discovering new music (the weirder the better!), modern art, eating dark chocolate, and figuring out how magic tricks are done!
