課堂經歷

Music Discovery Time is a great place for you to learn new songs and learn about music in a supportive and creative environment. Whether you are just beginning to explore music, wanting to understand more about music, or if you want to discover lots of ways to sing and play music, this is a great place to be. I will craft an individualized approach based on the way that you learn, your preferences, and your goals to help you explore music and grow in your confidence and skills with music. We will focus on finding meaningful experiences so that you enjoy your learning journey. Even if you don't have any experience with music, you can be successful in this music class!

Here are some ways we can discover music:
- sing and play songs in a variety of styles
- find out how different instruments can add great sounds to our music
- learn to sing and play what we hear
- learn to read and understand music notation
- find creative ways to move to music
- hear sounds of many different instruments
- hear musicians play music in many styles

Song choices will be guided by the interests and age of the learner, beginning with songs such as the following (for learners age 4-7):
Week 1 (7/24/23): Friendship Family
Week 2 (8/6/23): Music Makes Me Happy
Week 3 (8/13/23): Bought Me a Cat
Week 4 (8/20/23): Instruments are Fun

About me:
In 30 years of teaching music in private lessons and public elementary schools, the most incredible moments for me have occurred when students enjoyed learning the music and felt positive personal connections.  This is what I hope to bring to the many young people learning from home or hoping for more meaningful music experiences.  I am positive, upbeat, and relaxed, and invite students to join in as they feel comfortable.  If you are looking for a connective, nurturing, musical environment for your child or children, I hope you'll join us!

No mature content. As an art form, music often arises from sensitive historical or cultural contexts. Any historical/cultural music will be learned in a secular, informative way. Any potentially sensitive music (e.g., holidays) will be posted for parents and students to see a week before it would be used in class. If a student or parent feels uncomfortable with the selection, that music will not be used. Any student or family sensitivities (e.g., no holidays) will be treated with discretion and absolute respect. Students may have the opportunity to utilize digital materials on a music publisher's website. Use of these digital materials is not expected, but offered as an optional additional way to practice the songs we learn in class. Links to access the songs will be shared in the classroom site. Students will not need to create an account or log in to the music publisher's website to access those songs.

As a university-trained music teacher, I have learned to teach music as an art form, so that people with all kinds of life experiences and beliefs can participate in making music objectively, in a safe space.  I absolutely respect learner diversity, and welcome feedback on specific sensitive topics (i.e. family or cultural beliefs that make certain music sensitive). Conversations about sensitivity will be treated with the highest discretion.

Certifications and Experience:
Bachelor of Music Education
Master of Music in Music Education
Certified for 28 years as a K-12 music teacher, with ESL endorsement (expired May 2024)
18 years experience teaching music in public elementary schools
20 years experience teaching private music lessons and community choirs 
Currently a PhD student in Curriculum & Instruction
