Once basic phonics sounds are mastered, it is time to begin adding prefixes and suffixes to root/base words to make new words! Learning word parts (prefixes, roots/bases, and suffixes) can be incredibly helpful for several reasons: 1. Vocabulary Building: The main purpose of a suffix is to show what class of word it is (e.g. noun or adjective), to add meaning to the word, or change a word from one word class to another. **For example, the suffix -s/-es is added to nouns to make plural (more than one), or to verbs to show present tense (he runs, she chases). 2. Improved Reading and Writing Skills: By understanding the meanings different suffixes, your student can better comprehend what they read and express themselves more precisely in writing. Each week, we will learn new words based on a suffix with the goal of adding these building blocks and words to students' working vocabulary to aid in reading comprehension and writing: After class, I will send out an (optional) worksheet for extra practice! A ready-to-learn attitude, some paper, and a pencil or pen! (or a dry erase board) Index cards or similar type thick paper for making flashcards to keep -- I recommend punching a hole in the corner and putting on a ring for easy review.
