Once basic phonics sounds are mastered, it’s time to start building new words by adding suffixes to root/base words!

Learning word parts (prefixes, roots/bases, and suffixes) is incredibly useful for several reasons:
✨ Vocabulary Building: Suffixes can change a word’s meaning, indicate its part of speech (noun, adjective, verb, etc.), or show tense and number.
For example, the suffix -s/-es is added to nouns to make them plural (cats, boxes) or to verbs to show present tense (she runs, he chases).

✨ Improved Reading and Writing Skills: Understanding suffixes helps students recognize word meanings, improve spelling, and express themselves more clearly in writing.

Each week, we will explore a new suffix and learn words that use it. The goal is to help students expand their working vocabulary, strengthen reading comprehension, and improve writing fluency!

A ready-to-learn attitude, some paper, and a pencil or pen!  (or a dry erase board)
Index cards or similar type thick paper for making flashcards to keep -- I recommend punching a hole in the corner and putting on a ring for easy review.

I have over 20 years of experience teaching in my homeschool and more than 10 years of experience teaching ESL online—so I know firsthand how challenging English words can be! Learning roots, prefixes, and suffixes is a powerful way to expand vocabulary, which directly improves reading comprehension and writing skills.

In addition to teaching my four children, I hold a journalism degree from Penn State and am IMSE Orton-Gillingham trained in phonics and reading instruction. My goal is to help students break down words, understand their meanings, and become confident readers and writers.
