**This is an asynchronous class, which means there are no live lessons. There are recorded lessons for students to watch on their own time.** In this Self-Paced class, students will be given an imaginary one million dollars to spend! Learners will be given "catalogs" of items with photos and prices to choose from and will keep track of their spending on a spreadsheet. We will learn how to make estimates by rounding to various place values, and how to add and subtract large numbers as we keep...

Week 1Lesson 1Introduction and InstructionsThis lesson will give learners all the instructions and information they need to work independently for the rest of the class. Video lessons will explain how to use a spreadsheet to track spending, how to round numbers and how to subtract multi-digit numbers. Students will also be able to get started spending their money on houses and vehicles! (Catalogs will be posted for students to shop from!)Lesson 2Technology Spree!This lesson is for shopping for technology-related itemsLesson 3Travel Spree!This lesson is for shopping for travel-related items such as luggage and plane tickets.Lesson 4Extras Spree!This lesson is for spending the last of your money on miscellaneous "fun" items and for learning more about other options for using money apart from spending, like saving, investing and donating to charity.
Together, we will learn how to round numbers to the nearest hundred thousand, ten thousand, thousands and hundreds place, and how to add and subtract multi-digit numbers. Students will also get experience making decisions about how to spend money, how to use a spreadsheet to track spending, and how to make choices based on budget.
I have taught rounding, estimating, and subtracting multi-digit numbers at the elementary/primary level for 20 years, and done the "Million Dollar Shopping Spree" activity with my brick-and-mortar students for five years.
Students should have a basic understanding of money (dollars and cents) and how to add and subtract multi-digit numbers. One of the lessons will teach the concept of rounding numbers to the nearest whole or given place value.

The spreadsheet for tracking spending will be on Google Sheets. Families have the option to create a copy of the spreadsheet for their learner to complete digitally, or it can be printed and completed as a hard copy. Some links to YouTube videos will be posted in Lesson 4, which will teach students more about financial concepts such as investing and saving.
