What makes a battle decisive? How are battles won or lost? Why is the study of Military History more than the study of battles? These are some of the questions we will strive to answer during our discussions in "Decisive Battles". While this class discusses battles, Ancient and Modern - the student will frequently be asked "What would you do in this situation?". By way of applying the Principles of War (handout) the students will use their critical thinking skills to better understand how...
Students will learn about the tactics used in decisive battles. Students will learn about the military decision-making process. Students will learn about the consequences of decisive battles. Students will learn what makes a battle 'decisive'. Students will learn about the commanders and soldiers that fought in decisive battles. Students will learn about terrain and how it plays a role in the outcome of a battle.
I hold a Master's Degree in Military History (Land Warfare) from American Military University and am a certified History teacher with 30 years experience. Plus I really like Military History.

This is a Military History Club - "Decisive Battles", therefore while the emphasis will be upon commanders, leadership, decision-making, tactics and strategy - warfare will be discussed during these sessions.
No sources need by the student. I will share quotes, excerpts and primary sources relevant to the lesson. Students will read selections from Ancient Military Historians (e.g., Polybius) and modern Military Historians (e.g., David Chandler).
