The class will cover the Medieval Period in Europe, beginning in the late 5th century CE through to the 15th century.

This is a one-time class for students who are interested in Medieval Alchemy. This will be a condensed introduction to the subject; which is the medieval predecessor of chemistry. It is based in the transformation of matter and finding the elixir of life for a long lifespan or, ideally, immortality. We will be looking at alchemy and it’s mysteries in practice and literature in Medieval Europe. Topics that will be touched upon include: the “Philosopher’s Stone,” a few important figures to know, astronomy and astrology, alchemical recipes, and a brief history of the practice.

The class is taught in a lecture and slideshow style. We will be reviewing contemporary records from the time and historical translations of those works. Questions and discussions are highly encouraged.

Since this is a one-time course, no additional work will be assigned outside of the classroom.
