課堂經歷
In this one-time class we explore our solar system and all things related to space. We will look at astronomical maps created throughout history and discuss how maps of stars and planets evolved. We will examine pictures of far-away galaxies created for films, such as Star Wars. We will design our own map of either our known solar system or of an imagined galaxy far, far away. We will draw planets along with moons, asteroids, comets, rocks, and dust. We will discuss visual solutions on how to best represent our individual ideas on the map, for example through scale, colour coding or compass coordinates. This class provides an imaginative framework for your child to explore the world around them and learn graphic ways of representing their spatial ideas. Through the activity of drawing maps your child learns to solve problems and to present ideas and solutions graphically. They will pick up map reading skills but the focus is on exploring visual representations of a specific space. At the end of the class we will look at our work and share what our map of the universe represents. 3. Learn concepts of scale, measurement, and the frame of reference for maps.
Benefits of map making are:
- Topographical skills: Children are able to use directional labels such as north, south, east, and west
- Projective skills: Children are able to use their own position to determine a location and its relationship to other elements
- Euclidian skills: Children can accurately perceive spatial relationships such as those that are used on a paper map

I am a qualified schoolteacher and have taken many school classes to explore sites around London and then map them. I am also a trained artist and storyteller and bring geography and cultural studies alive through images and narratives. I have worked as a graphic web designer and taught visual communication to teenagers.
