課堂經歷

We will have teacher-guided instruction with student feedback throughout class.  The class structure will be as follows:
5 minutes: welcome and introduction to the lesson
15 minutes: class lesson with student interaction 
15 minutes: practicing skill learned in the lesson on word problems (we will be using white boards and slide shows when looking at the word problems)
10 minutes: the students will create their own word problem using the information learned in class
5 minutes: student wrap up and good-byes

This course will be complete over a series of six courses with the intent to provide a strong introduction on instructional ways to solve word problems using addition and subtraction using the WIPS model :{W-What is the question / I-What is the important information / P-what is your plan / S-Solve}

Class #1: Discuss key words used for addition and subtraction, addition and subtraction word problems and two-step word problems, and the WIPS model of solving a word problem
Class #2: Learners will have an opportunity to practice the WIPS model in various word problems with teacher guidance and will also review those key words that we find in addition and subtraction word problems.
Class #3: We will discuss key words used in multiplication and division word problems, view and discuss multiplication and division word problems, and use the WIPS model to solve two-step multiplication and division word problems with teacher guidance.
Class #4: Learners will have an opportunity to practice the WIPS model of addition in various two-step word problems with teacher guidance and will also review key words found in all four operations word problems.
Class #5: Learners will review key words, and the WIPS model for solving multi-step word problems and will begin solving word problems on their own, with teacher guidance as needed.
Class #6: After a quick review learners will work together to use what they have learned and work together to solve multi-step word problems to solve a fun riddle.

The only materials that students will need is some type of writing material (crayon / marker / pencil) and something to write on.  If they have a small white board and marker that will work too.

For the past 10 years I have specialized in teaching math to elementary age students.  I have learned that many students get overwhelmed when looking at a word problem and immediately they begin to shut down and tune out the information.  I have found that when teaching students to take word problems one step at a time and to analyze the information in the word problem, that they can solve them easily.  

My passion is teaching kiddos that math does not have to be overwhelming, but that we can find a way to embrace and love the challenge that math brings to our daily life.
