This class removes the guesswork, anxiety, and frustration from the writing experience. The tools taught enable students to explore ideas far beyond the formula of the five-paragraph essay. The Program introduces 8 Essays. In semester 2 of this course, we will focus on Essays 5-8. Each essay is paired with a literature book that will be used as its basis of discussion and instruction. The process for each essay and book is as follows. Invention - Students come to class having already read the assigned literature book. During class, we will discuss the book and complete a literary analysis together. The student will then select decisions made from within the text. They will consider both sides of the decision, choose which side to support, and develop a thesis. Arrangement - The structure of the Essay is taught. Students arrange their thesis and supporting evidence within the outline modeled. Elocution/Style - The 3rd class focuses on elements to dress up writing, adding tropes and sentence structure for maximum clarity and emphasis. It also reviews basic punctuation and spelling rules for self-editing. This process repeats with each essay and each book building on the previous essay. Students love this process because it is discussion-based. They have the opportunity to discuss real issues, express their opinions and learn to support their opinion. The process of reading great literature and writing persuasive thesis-driven essays allows students to grapple with ideas outside of their personal experiences. Weeks 1-4, Essay 5 Phantom Tollbooth Weeks 5-8, Essay 6 Where the Red Fern Grows Weeks 9-12, Essay 7 - Carry On, Mr Bowditch Weeks 13 -15, Essay 8 & 9 - Students' Choice By the end of this course, your student will have not only developed powerful skills for writing essays but logical thinking skills for life. They will have developed the thinking processes that lead to rational logic and persuasion.
學習目標
Second-semester students will build on all of the skills taught in semester 1. Additionally, they will focus on learning to anticipate and prepare for an opinion opposite to theirs. They will learn to clearly define terms to avoid confusion and considers circumstance in a matter.

In this class, we will address sensitive topics that may elicit differing opinions among students. However, I have extensive experience in facilitating such discussions in a classroom setting for the past seven years, helping students discover their beliefs on a given topic and the reasons behind them. Using the cannons of rhetoric and Socratic method, I challenge students to consider both sides of a thesis.
Apart from my experience in leading diverse groups of students in such discussions, I possess over 15 years of expertise in youth counseling and mentorship. My Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Washington, with a focus on education, social, and cultural change, has equipped me with the necessary knowledge and skills to objectively and respectfully guide students through challenging discussions.
Furthermore, I have been coaching students in writing for more than 13 years, which has honed my ability to communicate effectively and convey complex ideas to learners of different backgrounds and abilities.
