March 14th (3.14) is Pi Day and gives math lovers everywhere a perfect reason to celebrate, but it also offers many opportunities to integrate many subjects. In this one-time class, we will integrate math and English. Learners do not need any prior knowledge or understanding of Pi to take part in this class. For math, we will learn what is Pi and the Pi symbol. Then we will transition to English and write Pi-ku poems. Pi-ku poems are inspired by haikus. We will practice counting syllables and then write a poem with a different number of syllables on each line, based on the digits of Pi (3.14). Every learner in my classroom is important to me, and I want each learner to feel comfortable. If a student wants to share their Pi-ku's they can if not that is fine as well. Regardless, they're still building essential skills! I can't wait to write Pi-ku's with your student in my Outschool classroom!
