In this class, we will develop an understanding of what it means to multiply. Students will learn to apply the strategies of equal groups and arrays to solve a basic multiplication sentence. We will read a story and notice the way the main character groups items in her surroundings in order to better understand how many items there were in each scenario. We will then apply those strategies to real life situations and students will model multiplication sentences with small objects to show...
I am an experienced educator with 30+ years of experience in grades K-8, with 15 of those years specifically with third grade. I have a Master's Degree and an Elementary Math Specialist Degree.
Students should have a good grasp of addition going in to this course.
Students will need small manipulatives for solving problems: small coins, paper squares, Legos, cereal pieces, etc. We will need approximately 40 pieces in all. I recommend either a whiteboard/marker or paper/pencil to work problems out.
