Each class will begin with a set of words to decode with the teacher. Students will complete a written sort as the teacher goes through the word list. Next, students will work on one or two of the following activities: read and draw, word builders, fill in the blank, word hunt, picture to word match. At the end of each lesson, students will take turns reading a level appropriate story with our target phonics words! 

These phonics skills are essential to reading and spelling. This class will build a strong foundation that will help your child's confidence and understanding in the future. 

Class 1: short vowels : We will review all long vowel sounds and students will learn hand motions to help them remember what sound each short vowel makes. This will be used in all future classes to cue and help remind students what vowel to use when sounding out or spelling a word. 
Class 2: short a: This lesson will reinforce how to sound out words with the short a vowel sound and we will compare with the long a sound when sounding out words. 
Class 3: short o: This lesson will reinforce how to sound out words with the short o vowel sound and we will compare with the long o sound when sounding out words. Students will begin to work on choosing the correct vowel to fill in the blank. 
Class4: short e: This lesson will reinforce how to sound out words with the short e vowel sound and we will compare with the long e sound when sounding out words. Short e and i can easily be confused. We will begin working on tricks to differentiate between short e and short i. 
Class 5: short i: This lesson will reinforce how to spell and sound out words with short e or short i. 
Class 6: Initial and Final S- blends: sk, sl, sp, sn, sw, st: These blends are found in many words. We will work on sounding out the blend and applying them to our spelling and using this skill when reading.
Class 7: R- blends- br, cr, dr, fr, pr, tr: These blends are found in many words. We will work on sounding out the blend and applying them to our spelling and using this skill when reading.
Class 8: L- blends- bl, cl, fl, pl, gl, sl: These blends are found in many words. We will work on sounding out the blend and applying them to our spelling and using this skill when reading.
Class 9: N- blends- nd, ng, nk, nt: These blends are found in many words. We will work on sounding out the blend and applying them to our spelling and using this skill when reading.
Class 10: SH Diagraph- We will work on using each diagraph in spelling and reading. We will work on hand motions to help us decide which blend to use when spelling. 
Class 11: CH Diagraph- We will work on using each diagraph in spelling and reading. We will work on hand motions to help us decide which blend to use when spelling. 
Class 12: TH Diagraphs- We will work on using each diagraph in spelling and reading. We will work on hand motions to help us decide which blend to use when spelling. 
Class 13: WH Diagraphs- We will work on using each diagraph in spelling and reading. We will work on hand motions to help us decide which blend to use when spelling. 
Class 14: VCe Long A - We will learn the basics for long vowels during these lessons. We will compare to short vowel words. 
Class 15: VCe Long O- We will learn the basics for long vowels during these lessons. We will compare to short vowel words. 
Class 16: VCe Long I- We will learn the basics for long vowels during these lessons. We will compare to short vowel words. 
Class 17: VCe Long E- We will learn the basics for long vowels during these lessons. We will compare to short vowel words. 
Class 18: Long E/ Vowel Diagraphs- ee, ie, ey, ea
Class 19: Long A/ Vowel Diagraphs- ai, ay, ey, eight, eak
Class 20: Long O/ Vowel Diagraphs- oa, oe, ow
Class 21: /ou/
Class 22: R controlled a- ar
Class 23: R controlled u- ur, ir, er, ear
Class 24: R controlled o- or, ore, oar, our
Class 25: R controlled a (long)- air, are, ear
Class 26: -ing/ -ung endings

A journal devoted to this class and a small dry erase board is highly recommended. Students can also use blank paper. Please have a pencil, eraser and coloring tools available to your child during each lesson.

Hello! My name is Mrs. Holly, and I am happy you are here. I absolutely love learning and teaching while inspiring creativity. I strive to give my students a supportive, engaging, and laid-back environment where they are free to be themselves. I earned my Master’s degree in Elementary Education and have been teaching for over 10 years. I have experience working with children in preschool through 12th grade in multiple educational settings. After graduating, I worked as a classroom teacher for 7 years. During my time with the school system I worked on curriculum development projects, provided district-wide training and served as the lead language arts teacher for K-7. I eventually transitioned to provide instruction as a Certified Tutor and enjoy a renewed focus on my instruction practices. Writing instruction has been a passion since the beginning of my career. I frequently participate in workshops and classes to gain more knowledge and to find new ways to meet my student’s needs. I enjoy fostering creativity and building confidence through writing. I believe becoming a strong writer and finding joy in the process can greatly enhance a child’s educational experience.
