課堂經歷

This is a project based learning opportunity for your learners who are developing their skills with US money. The time each class will need to work through the project varies depending on the learners enrolled. I make sure to schedule time in my calendar to offer help to any students who need more one-on-one help.

Week 1 we set up our lemonade stands: Adding up coin values in a card game, learners identify the amount of traffic their stands will have. Then reasoning on the layout and traffic in our city, they locate their stands. We take a trip to the virtual Farmers' Market where we chose a supplier for our produce. And then design our menu using the cost per serving and profit market model. Homework is only to finish up anything not finished in class, and draw our stands and illustrate our menu.

We start week 2 with purchasing our first stock (initial investment and inventory) and calculate the costs. We then run the stand for 1-2 simulated "days" calculating the money collected, and deciding on the amount of stock needed. We discuss the importance of restocking as needed. There may be some homework if learners don't finish their work in class.

Week 3 begins with discussing potential hazards and/or potential beneficial events. On each of the 1-2 simulated days some of the lemonade stands experience some sort of catastrophe or advantage. Learners evaluate their stock and earnings and/or losses.

Week 4 starts out with finishing up anything left over from the previous weeks. Sometimes we need to finish up the final day of sales. We then total up all of earnings and spending, and some learners will sell back parts of their remaining stock. With any time remaining we talk about what we could spend our earnings on and how realistic the experience was.

學習目標

There are several learning goals involved in this short class:
1) Learners will add and subtract US dollar amounts in decimal form.
2) Learners will experience an entrepreneurial endeavor.
3) Learners will explore several real life scenarios involving operations involving money.
4) Learners will make decisions based on experience and data.

供應清單
There will be handouts that need to be printed each week. It is strongly advised to have a folder for learners to keep their materials in from week-to-week. If printables are not an option, a Google Drive format is available.

Hey Outschool families, I'm so glad you found my little corner of Outschool!
I love to teach middle school math to learners here. I work hard to keep learning fun, engaging, and when possible-challenging.

I've been teaching math for more than 2 decades, as a tutor, homeschool teacher, and homeschool mom. My all time favorite branch of mathematics is Geometry because it's so tangible, we can see it around us every day. But I also love the puzzle nature of Algebra and have a way to pass that on to my students.

I believe that every person can be a math person, even if they don't think they are right now. They just need to experience the challenging topics and skills in a way that makes sense to their unique brain. I see every one of my learners as a Unique Math Mind, and it's a privilege and a pleasure to help them see it too.

While I focus on Math, because that's the subject I love most, I am working on some classes that utilize math but aren't math focused. I love to garden and can my produce, so I'm working on something in that area. I'm also a quilter, and there's a TON of math involved with that sewing skill that I'd love to share. Actually, swing in general may pop up here soon.

I also will be adding some life skills classes very soon. My college degree is the brain based background to how we learn and things that make learning a challenge. I am also a late diagnosed ADHD brain, who struggled with a lot of things and developed a lot of skills and strategies that got me through my school years. So I'll be adding some study skills, planning, and journaling classes that will focus on our unique brains and relieving test and school anxiety.
