In this one-time class, students will learn about the Chicano movement and the Brown Berets, a pro-Chicano organization that emerged during this movement in the late 1960s. We will briefly discuss the Brown Berets' similarities to the Black Panthers as well. Unfortunately, most United States history curriculums do not cover this part of history and our students deserve to know about the contributions of Mexican-Americans. Students will improve their understanding of the Brown Berets and the Chicano Movement.
Miss Sara is a Chicana / Mexican-American who grew up with her family's Mexican traditions. As she got older, she started learning more about important Chicano leaders on her own. She earned a Master's degree in Education from National University in La Jolla, California. She is currently taking a graduate course in Mexican American studies to further her understanding of Chicano culture.
