Nothing promotes reading like a good read aloud....AND FORTS!  That's right, I read a book while in a homemade fort. I encourage students to create their own forts before class starts  and then join class from there. But no worries, students don't have to have a fort. They can join me in mine! 

This class is intended to promote the enjoyment of reading by having fun but at the same time we will be checking for basic comprehension. We will monitor facts learned, story elements, make connections, and much more. Read alouds are proven to support fluency, build vocabulary, and build an interest and love for reading. So this class has many benefits aside from just being fun.

  I really get into these books and have a great time with the kiddos. I am not afraid to be silly and do silly voice overs of the characters. Especially if it promotes fun with reading. Although my number one purpose for this class is pure enjoyment, I also ask questions that encourage higher level thinking and comprehension of the books we read. See the syllabus below to see the outline for each lesson.

Characterization with the Book: Froggy Get's a Dog
 I can't wait to read this book about Froggy who is getting a new dog. We will use the details in the text to describe what kind of character he is displaying. We will read to enjoy this fiction text...in my fort!

Story Elements with the Book: Clifford's Birthday Party
 As we read for enjoyment, we will stop to ask questions and make connections to the story based on its story elements (setting, problem, solution...). What could go wrong with a birthday party?

Sequence of Events with the Book: Curious George Makes Pancakes
 Curious George is always up to something. This story is fun to retell the story events in sequence. He does some pretty interesting things in this story.

Descriptive Words with the book: It It's Snowy and You Know It, Clap Your Paws!
 Rhyming stories are the best!  This story has great descriptive words that we will point out and discuss.  We will also read for enjoyment as we listen to the rhyming patterns of the story about animals having fun in the snow!

Students should be able to share their ideas and thoughts by taking turns. I will be doing the reading so no need to read. Just come enjoy the stories for fun and comprehension....in a fort!

Students do NOT have to have a fort made for this class. It is encouraged, that if they choose to have a fort for class, that it is constructed BEFORE class. We will not take time to make forts in this class. They should be made prior to class.  A simple blanket over you and your device could even be a simple fort.
