Developed by the College Board as a method of rhetorical criticism, the OPTIC Method is a strategy for visual analysis and is commonly seen on AP Language and Composition and AP History end-of-course exams. Textual analysis can be intimidating to some learners, but the OPTIC Method can be a pressure-free technique and fun way to introduce students to textual analysis via visual analysis. Students will learn about the OPTIC Method and practice analyzing a visual text. This will aid students in their Advanced Placement Language and Composition and/or AP History courses, and better prepare them for the end-of-course AP Exam.
In 2010, I was a trainee at a College Board sponsored AP Language and Composition training workshop, where participants were guided on how best to teach students the OPTIC Method. I have taught this method to students since that time.
Students will need two handouts for class: the OPTIC Method sheet to explain the strategy, and the visual image provided for them to analyze. These handouts will be available in the classroom.
