課堂經歷

Whether you are applying to a selective high school, college, scholarship, or job opportunity, an interview (or several) may be part of the process. Interviews help the selection committee to better understand you as a unique person and how you might fit in with their organization. The interview is your chance to showcase your personality, achievements, potential, and interest in the opportunity.

Preparing for your interview can help you feel more calm and confident. Let me help you take the stress out of the interview process.

In this class, the student will practice discussing their
- educational background
- extracurricular activities
- work or volunteer experience
- leadership experience
- accomplishments
- interests/passions

In addition to learning how to improve their answers to interview questions, students can also choose to discuss
- how to improve nonverbal communication
- the importance of asking questions and how to do so effectively
- what to wear to an interview
- tips for decreasing nervousness and increasing confidence
- how to prepare differently for in-person, virtual, or phone interviews

Class Structure:

Before we meet, I will share some sample interview questions that can apply to high school, college, scholarship, or job interviews. I encourage the student to review these and spend some time thinking about how they would answer these questions. I ask that students let me know about the opportunity for which they are applying before we meet. I also encourage students to share a copy of their resume so that I can better understand their backgrounds and experiences.

At the start of class, I will confirm with the student the type of opportunity for which they are preparing. This will allow me to customize the interview practice with the most applicable questions and advice. I will share some preliminary tips and allow some time for the student to ask questions. I will then lead them in a mock interview. I will provide feedback in between questions. After the mock interview, the student and I will discuss their performance. I encourage the student to give themselves feedback as well, as self-reflection is an important skill to develop for life! I will note the student's strengths and provide feedback on areas for improvement. We will discuss additional interview strategies and I will once again provide some time for the student to ask questions that may be particular to their situation.

About Me and Teaching Style:

My teaching style is conversational, collaborative, and encouraging. I have over a decade of experience working with high school and college students on a range of issues including college admissions, major selection and other academic advising issues, and resume writing and career counseling.

Benefits of the Class:

Students will feel more comfortable and confident answering common and curveball interview questions. Students will also have the benefit of a class recording in order to review their own performance and our feedback.

I have interviewed many college applicants as an alumni interviewer for Brown University. I also have experience in admissions at another Ivy League university and have served on hiring committees at a four-year state university.
