課堂經歷
This four-class course will build on the skills learned in my single introductory class "Improve Your Writing and Editing: Dissecting Sentences With Speed | Basics". We will cover more sophisticated and complex sentence parts and patterns. I believe in learning through doing! There will be instruction, but students will be spending most of the class dissecting sentences. Although students will become more familiar with the elements of grammar, this is not a theoretical grammar class. The primary aim is for students to become fluent at dissecting sentences into practical and functional "chunks", an important step in learning how to improve weak sentences. We will follow a structured approach that I have developed to improve my own writing, as well as the writing of my private tutoring students. The skills learned in this class will better prepare students for an upcoming course dedicated to learning techniques and operations that will improve bloated, unclear, and cumbersome sentences. Class 1: Review and reinforcement of skills from the introductory class (Subject, Verb, Object, Prepositional Phrases) Class 2: Learn how to recognize and dissect Adverbs, Auxiliary Verbs, Modal Verbs, and Complements Class 3: Learn how to recognize and dissect Relative Clauses and Noun Clauses Class 4: Learn how to identify and dissect Complex and Compound Sentences

At the end of this course, students will be able to confidently and quickly dissect almost any type of sentence, giving them the tools to better analyze their own sentences. We will also touch on some introductory techniques to remedy awkward sentences.

All young students can write; but, I have found that few know how to revise. I wish to give students lifelong skills to become confident editors of their own work. I have a particular interest in teaching students how to fix unclear and bloated sentences.
I want to take the mystery and pain out of the editing process.
I believe in learning through doing and learning by making mistakes! I believe in practice, practice, practice! My class time is dedicated to doing plenty of "old-school" exercises and speed drills.
I received my bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Toronto. I received a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology, also from the University of Toronto. During my graduate studies, I was a teaching and grading assistant, providing feedback on hundreds of freshmen and sophomore papers. I realized that many high school graduates were underprepared for college-level writing assignments. This experience has inspired me to create classes that better prepare students for writing beyond high school.
I also have extensive experience as a successful grant writer. I have been writing grants for over two decades, and I have worked as a freelance grant writer at not-for-profit organizations and fundraising companies.
I am also an avid musician. I grew up playing the piano. This year I began learning the theremin. If you are not familiar with the theremin, I encourage you to find out more about this odd-looking musical instrument!
