In this course, your learner will be working through Following Narnia, Volume 1: The Lion's Song from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). This course takes the students through unit six of the program. Your learner will learn how to make an outline by determining key words and then move into paragraph writing by summarizing non-fiction texts, retelling short fictional stories, and summarizing multiple references. Learners will be taught to organize thoughts and ideas by creating key word outlines from fiction and non-fiction texts, and writing paragraphs from them. They will dress up their writing by systematically adding parts of speech such as adverbs, strong verbs, and quality adjectives.

The learner should be prepared to spend 2-3 hours per week on homework. This will include writing compositions, studying vocabulary, and being prepared for the next lesson with an outline. The adult at home should be prepared to help when needed. Google Docs is mandatory for grading purposes. In addition to writing assignments, your learner will be encouraged to send a video of their retellings each week to the rest of the class. Your learner will not only be submitting this project, but will also be able to see others and provide them feedback as well as receive it. Because this class is based on the Narnia series, your learner will be expected to read the assigned chapters. There will not be any discussion of the chapters in this class, but you are welcome to join me for that in a separate class I will be offering. Vocabulary quizzes and review activities will also be assigned on Quizlet, but are optional for participation.2 - 4 每週課外時間

The learner will be be provided detailed feedback based on finished assignments and according to the rubrics in the Student Book. I will use a Google Form which will be sent to you in PDF form for your records. Google Docs is mandatory for feedback. It is the responsibility of the adult at home to collect grades and samples of learners' compositions for their own records. ***If you do not want a number grade, please message me privately so we can make arrangements for your learner. It would be helpful to have some experience with the IEW method, but it is not required. Please just make sure you are willing to communicate with me about the needs of your learner so I can differentiate the lessons.

Google tools will be used for compositions and for some asynchronous activities. To use these Google tools, each learner will need a GMail account (this can be your account or an account you set up separately for this class). Flip(grid) will be used for oral retelling from the outlines. All activities are only available to the learners in this class.
You will need to purchase any publication of the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis.
