Welcome to the I Survived graphic novel book club! In this ongoing class, we will meet weekly to discuss these fantastic historical books. Please note that each class can be taken separately and does not build on any other classes, so you can drop in and out as needed! The "I Survived” novels are incredibly popular, and are a unique way of teaching about important historical events. In each class, we will focus on one particular book in the series through a combination of teacher-led and student-led discussion. Discussion is only focused on that book and does not build on previous books, therefore students can enroll at any point and not be behind. I will begin each class with a fun Q&A activity tied to that week's reading selection, and then we will discuss the plot from the week's assigned book. We will also discuss some "behind the scenes" historical facts in order to enrich our learning of the book. Additionally, I will share personal experience with two of the events (books 4 and 6). Please note that upon finishing the series of graphic novels, I am open to adding classes for the I Survived chapter books in order to continue the series. I highly encourage interaction and participation in my classes, while also being mindful of those who are not comfortable participating. Although no prior knowledge is needed, students will most likely enjoy this class more if they have read the selected book each week. Here is a list of the dates, books, and chapters that will be covered: Week of 8/15: I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic (Book 1) Week of 8/22: I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916 (Book 2) Week of 8/29: I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944 (Book 3) Week of 9/5: I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001 (Book 4) Week of 9/12: I Survived the Attack of the Grizzlies, 1967 (Book 5) Week of 9/19: I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005 (Book 6) Week of 10/3: I Survived the Great Chicago Fire, 1871 (Book 7) Week of 10/10: I Survived the American Revolution, 1776 (Book 8) CHAPTER BOOKS: Week of 10/17: I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941 Week of 10/24: I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941 Week of 10/31: I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 Week of 11/7: I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 Week of 11/14: I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg, 1863 Week of 11/21: I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg, 1863 Week of 11/28: I Survived the Japanese Tsunami, 2011 Week of 12/5: I Survived the Japanese Tsunami, 2011 Week of 12/12: I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii, AD 79 Week of 12/19: I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii, AD 79 ***These classes will be added to in subsequent weeks. I will update these dates once we reach the end of the first cycle.

Hello all learners and parents! My name is Mandy and I teach classes designed to help children reduce stress and anxiety. I have 16 years of experience using techniques that are research-based and proven to aid in mind/body relaxation. My goal is to help children learn to cope with and manage anxiety through techniques they can use throughout their lives.
My academic background is in Clinical Psychology. I have both a B.S. and M.S. in Clinical Psychology and have 20 years of experience working with youth. I have worked in a therapeutic setting since 2004, teaching social skills groups, relaxation exercises, art therapy, and play therapy sessions. As a psychometrist, I have extensive experience administering comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations and cognitive rehabilitation assessments, including vision therapy and neurofeedback, with children and adolescents. I have worked with a wide range of diagnoses (ADHD, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, Autism, Dyslexia, behavior disorders, etc.), ages (age 2 to adult), and intellectual levels (severely delayed to gifted).
I am an avid reader who reads several novels a week, raising 3 children who are also bibliophiles!
