This class uses a slide show to present information, maps, and pictures to explain how the United States Navy was able to deliver soldiers and their equipment to the shores of Normandy on D-Day. Before troops could leave Omaha beach, Navy Destroyers played a key role in opening escape routes through concrete bunkers. The role of sailors who piloted boats carrying troops ashore was also a crucial part of the story that often goes unappreciated. A 2-minute YouTube video of an NBC News segment on D-Day will also be used. Key information to be covered includes: (1) What is an amphibious assault and why is it so difficult? (2) What was the plan for D-Day and what made it such a difficult task for the Navy? (3) What battlefield experiences in the Pacific and Mediterranean were important for the success of D-Day? (4) How did the Navy perform on D-Day and how did battleships save Omaha beach from disaster?
