This class will introduce students to the influence of epidemics in world history through (1)overviews of 3 epidemics and how they changed world history, (2) discussion of the impacts of those epidemics, and (3) final discussion of possible impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The epidemics to be discussed are: (1) 2 rounds of Black Plague across the Silk Road; (2) the introduction of smallpox and measles in the Americas that led to the slave trade; and (3) the influenza pandemic after World War...
Students will be exposed to the importance of diseases in world history. They will be encouraged to explore the paradoxical benefits and dangers that come with improved transportation, trade, and communication. They will be encouraged to understand the current pandemic as a factor shaping their future life. They will be encouraged to understand current events based on evidence-based standards used by historians.
The instructor has about 40 years experience as a facilitator used to dealing with sensitivities during group discussions, showing respect for people's opinions while focusing on what is factual as opposed to what is more speculative. Insisting that members of groups respect the views of others is a standard that is always maintained.

3 註冊後即可取得文件Students are asked to read 3 handouts before the class to help things move along smoother. Handout 1 is a list of 21 terms that will be used along with an explanation of each. Handout 2 is an agenda for the course. Handout 3 is an interview with the author of a history on the influenza pandemic. Encouraging active student conversation while also keeping on schedule will keep this instructor on his toes!

This subject involves talking about the origin of the slave trade in African Americans and the devastating impact of Afro-Eurasian diseases on Native Americans. The instructor is mindful that these topics may be sensitive to students and parents. He is an experienced facilitator who presents information based on historical evidence and manages discussions to ensure students show respect for the views of other students as they voice opinions.
