Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to the Personal NarrativeIn this class, learners will review the characteristics of a personal narrative and create a writing topic.Week 2Lesson 2Drafting the Introduction & Body ParagraphsIn this class, learners will learn the three parts of an introduction and review using the concept of 'show not tell' to draft body paragraphs.Week 3Lesson 3Drafting the Conclusion, Revising & EditingIn this class, learners will create a reflective conclusion for their essay. Learners will also get a revision and editing focus for the first essay.Week 4Lesson 4Introduction to the Expository EssayIn this class, learners will select an essay topic about something they're passionate about.Week 5Lesson 5DraftingIn this class, learners will compose an engaging introduction and review the five elements of a well developed sentence.Week 6Lesson 6Drafting, Revising & EditingIn this class, learners will review the requirements of a five paragraph essay and review the revision and editing focus for this essay.Week 7Lesson 7Introduction to the Persuasive EssayIn this class, learners will select a persuasive topic and convince the class of certain topics in a game.Week 8Lesson 8Brainstorming & The IntroductionIn this class, learners will brainstorm and draft the introduction for their essay.Week 9Lesson 9Drafting the Body Paragraphs, Conclusion, Revising & EditingIn this class, learners will draft body paragraphs and end their essay powerfully with a conclusion that addresses the target audience. Learners will also be reminded of revision and editing before submitting the final copy.Week 10Lesson 10Introduction to the Literature ResponseIn this class, learners will select a piece of fiction to respond to for the literature response essay.Week 11Lesson 11Selecting a topic & Drafting the Intro and Body ParagraphsIn this class, learners will select a specific topic to write about and begin drafting the introduction and body paragraphs.Week 12Lesson 12Drafting the Conclusion, Revising & EditingIn this class, learners will draft a conclusion that ends with a final connection. Learners will also review revising and editing.Week 13Lesson 13Introduction to the Research PaperIn this class, learners will be introduced to the research paper and select a topic.Week 14Lesson 14Organizing Information Using Source/Note CardsIn this class, learners will learn to use source/note cards to keep track of information for their paper.Week 15Lesson 15Drafting the Research EssayIn this class, learners will review the introduction, body paragraph and conclusion requirements for the final essay. The final essay will be due within a week after the course ends.
The goal of this course is for students to be able to construct a well-written narrative, expository, persuasive, literature response, and a research paper. Students will use all the steps in the writing process. Students will be to write introductions with an engaging hook and a three-point thesis. Students will be able to construct well-developed paragraphs with clear topic sentences and smooth transitions. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of reviewing written work for conciseness, clarity, and grammar. Students will be able to cite sources. Students will adhere to the standard conventions and mechanics of English grammar.
