When Ezell Blair Jr. (Jibreel Khazan), David Richmond, Franklin McCain, and Joseph McNeil, decided to sit-in at a "whites-only" lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina their actions launched a movement. Join us to learn the incredible story of what led the friends to take action and how their action rippled across the country. We will dive into the story of the sit in movement by examining some famous and not so famous images of sit-ins that took place across the United States. In this class, learners will develop their critical thinking skills by sharing observations, prior knowledge, asking questions and working together to create inferences about the images. As the instructor I provide information on the sit-in movement and the stories behind the images as we collaborate to determine the importance of each work. While the class is discussion based and designed to foster interaction and cooperation, learners are welcome to participate at their comfort level. If your learner prefers to listen or engage in the discussion through the chat box, that works too! Learners of all levels are welcome in this class. No prior knowledge of US History is needed as each learner brings their own unique knowledge, skills and life experiences to our group. While this class focuses on the sit-ins specifically, I do provide background information on segregation for learners who may be new to the topic. Whether your learner is new to exploring the history of this time period or an expert, there is something for everyone in this class! In this class we will examine the following questions: What is a sit-in? Why did the Greensboro 4 choose a sit-in as their form of resistance? How did the sit-in movement spread across the nation? What was the impact of the sit-in movement? What lessons can we learn from the work of these four individuals? *********** Interested in this class but need a different time? Feel free to send me a message with a time request. I do my best to meet class requests if I am able to do so. This class is also offered for older learners. This class discusses the history of the Civil Rights Movement and sit-ins in the United States. We will briefly discuss the background to the sit-ins including the legacy of slavery, segregation, Jim Crow laws, discrimination and other examples of injustice. All information will be age appropriate, no graphic images will be shown. However, some learners may find this content upsetting. If you are not sure if this class is appropriate for your learner, please send me a message so we can discuss the course and whether it is appropriate for your learner.
I put a great deal of thought into teaching history in a way that is age appropriate for younger learners while also being true to the realities of what really happened. I have had extensive training in teaching difficult topics from organizations such as National Humanities Center and the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. A high level of care and consideration has been applied when selecting resources and images for the class that will help learners gain an understanding of the past while remaining age appropriate. These resources include, but are not limited to, materials from PBS Learning Media, the Smithsonian Institution, and Facing History and Ourselves, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping teachers and students stand up to racism through learning and exploring history.

I am a licensed social studies educator (NC Teaching License) with a M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies education. I hold an undergraduate degree in History with a minor in Political Science. I am also a homeschooling mom of two children. I have over fifteen years of experience teaching a variety of social studies topics including the history of many marginalized groups in the United States and other stories that are often not told in mainstream history courses. I have taken professional development courses with a focus on inclusivity in teaching history through institutions including the National Humanities Center, Smithsonian Institution and the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. I am also certified to teach Advanced Placement United States History and Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics and have taught both courses for over ten years.
As a student and teacher of United States History, I have taken many undergraduate and graduate level courses on the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. My passion for the Civil Rights Movement was fueled by a weeklong educator tour of landmarks from the Civil Rights Movement throughout the American South. Meeting individuals who directly participated in the push for social justice was inspiring and I want to share their stories with students. In addition, I am from North Carolina and live just a few miles away from where the historic sit-ins took place. I am excited to share this important story from history with learners!
