課堂經歷
Florence Nightingale was an amazing woman, who changed the face of nursing forever. 2020 was the 200th anniversary of her birth and I'm really excited to celebrate her life and works in this fun, interactive Outschool class! Students do not need to have any prior knowledge of this amazing woman. The class will run as follows: 2 minutes: Introductions. 5 minutes: We will look at a picture of someone washing their hands and ask: why is this so important? This will lead us to talk about Florence Nightingale's realisation that hand-washing was really important in stopping the spread of germs. 5 minutes: We will become History Detectives! Using evidence on the screen (a map of Italy, a photograph of an owl, a Bible, a first aid kit) we will try to work out what type of woman Florence Nightingale was. 5 minutes: We will imagine we are going on a bumpy boat journey to the Crimea (students will be invited to stand up and sway on the spot and pretend to be on a bumpy journey!) We will find out about how Florence helped the soldiers there. We will talk about how she cleaned and cared for them and saved lives. Whilst she was in the Crimea she became known as 'the Lady of the Lamp'. 5 minutes: Learners will have the opportunity to draw a lamp (they will be able to copy a very simple template on my slides) and then colour it in yellow to show the light. They might also like to add extra detail to their picture to show other things about Florence Nightingale's life. 5 minute: We will find out about what happened when Florence Nightingale returned to England. She met with Queen Victoria and persuaded her to take health issues more seriously. Florence set up a hospital school to train nurses and is considered by many to be the founder of modern nursing. (Did you know that International Nurses Day is celebrated every year on 12 May, Florence Nightingale’s birthday?) 3: Sequence challenge! Working as a group, learners will be challenged to put six events in the correct order in which they happened. Can they beat the clock and help Florence to train more nurses! --- * NOTE - I also run this class for 8-10 year olds * I can't wait to meet your learners! This class is one of a series of 'History Detective' classes I run; attend three and gain your certificate! : ) I have a Masters from the University of Oxford, a professional teaching qualification, and many years’ experience teaching English, History and Creative Writing. Classroom Policies: We respect others and have fun learning together. Please feel free to email me any questions you may have. My most important policy: there is no such thing as a bad question! Please come into the class with an open mind and we will all learn from each other. I hope to see you in class!
學習目標
Students will learn about Florence Nightingale.

父母的引導和規範
The class discusses that Florence Nightingale became a nurse because of a religious conviction.
The class does discuss that Florence Nightingale went to the Crimean War and helped saved soldiers' lives. There is, therefore, some mention of warfare and casualties, but the main focus is on Florence Nightingale's pioneering work. Our focus is that Florence Nightingale saved lives!
Students will be invited to stand up if they have enough space and to sway and to shut their eyes for a moment and pretend that they are travel sick! Parents may want to supervise their student doing this, and/or ensure they have enough space around them.
