In this 3-week class, students will master the high school essay format, focusing on thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting evidence, transitions, and conclusions. Each session breaks down these key elements through interactive mini-lessons, writing exercises, and real-world examples. Class Structure: Classes meet twice a week, beginning with short lectures, followed by hands-on activities where students develop and refine their own essays. I incorporate slides, video clips, and real-time discussions to illustrate concepts and keep students engaged. Teaching Style: My style is interactive and supportive, blending clear instruction with open discussions and individual feedback. I encourage students to ask questions and share ideas, helping them feel confident and capable in their writing. Interaction: Students will engage in group discussions, brainstorm sessions, and personalized feedback moments on their drafts. Students will have options to drop comments and questions in the chat. Or, during their time when portions of their essay is being reviewed.

With over 25 years of teaching experience, I’ve worked with high school students in New York City, Chicago, and Atlanta, helping them build their writing skills and confidence. I’ve also created engaging writing programs for students across Washington state, Iowa, Nebraska, and Georgia. As a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College—ranked among the top liberal arts schools in the U.S. for its focus on writing and critical thinking, in a tradition modeled after Oxford’s educational model—I bring a writing-intensive, hands-on approach to teaching. Sarah Lawrence and Oxford are historically revered for their academic excellence and commitment to nurturing independent thinkers, which deeply influences my teaching style. In addition, my professional experience in writing—having secured grants and government contracts—adds a real-world dimension to my instruction. If you're looking for a course that blends personalized attention, real-world writing expertise, and a top-tier academic approach, this class is for you!
