We would love to meet your learner! ** Hands-on Learning=Mastery, Confidence, and Learning that Sticks! This class helps students dive deeply into number sense and beyond in a hands-on way using physical or printable Montessori manipulatives, creating a firm mathematical foundation from numbers 1 to 999. Students who truly understand and master math concepts learn to love math, and we want our students to experience math in a hands-on way where they know they can try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. Each class begins with a routine-oriented calendar time to help build number fluency, confidence, and class relationships. Fun games, songs, and mathematical conversations help engage students and give them a natural way to apply concepts. We work with place value, addition and subtraction with and without regrouping (static and dynamic addition), skip counting, patterns, fractions, telling time, money, data and graphing, probability, basic multiplication, geometry, and measurement. Every lesson and activity is planned to help students understand and apply what they are learning in a hands-on way! We play games and frequently review so that we are constantly learning new skills, while also building mastery of older skills. Our goal is for your child to learn math to apply math concepts in many ways, while also having fun! Students need to have the actual manipulatives with them (or a provided printable version) as we work through lessons together. There is a second camera used in class to show the teacher's table so that the students are guided through problems step by step, working toward independence. This class can be used as review of first grade math or for a first or second grade math class. Each week of class is unique and students may stay all year or come in for the week they need. This schedule may be adapted to meet learner needs: End of August/September: Exploring with Montessori beads 1-9 Building a bead stair Counting and adding within 10 Using a ten frame Fact families within 10 Comparing numbers within 10 Subitizing numbers within 10 Adding and subtracting on ten frame Count sets of pennies and nickels Exploring with patterns October: Exploring geometry with shapes, lines, and symmetry Exploring with teen numbers Using number cards to build teen numbers Using Montessori beads to build teen numbers Counting by 10s and count sets of dimes Continue working with facts within 10 November: Continue reviewing previous content Add and subtract to 20 using beads, counters, and a 20 frame Use rulers to measure to the nearest inch Count by 5s and count sets of nickels December: Continue reviewing all previous content Begin building larger numbers with Montessori beads Explore with fractions Count by 2s January: Continue reviewing all previous content Begin adding and subtracting numbers with static addition Begin counting sets of mixed coins February: Continue reviewing all previous content Begin adding with dynamic addition (regrouping) Begin subtracting with dynamic subtraction Use fractions to measure more accurately Explore with geometrical shapes, lines, and angles March: Continue reviewing all previous content Explore with telling time Continue with geometry April: Continue reviewing all previous content Explore multiplication as repeated sets of Montessori beads Explore multiplication in real-life May: Continue reviewing all previous content Explore with surveys, data, graphing, and probability The summer review version of this class meets 1 day a week starting in mid-May. https://outschool.com/classes/summer-review-hands-on-montessori-inspired-math-level-a-for-kindergarten1st-UhOgrldk?usid=6msWnIQO&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link Most students either move on to Level B (https://outschool.com/classes/hands-on-montessori-inspired-advanced-math-level-b-2x-a-week-with-manipulatives-fmbkSDsB?usid=6msWnIQO&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link) or restart Level A, depending on progress. The class restarts in late August. Class Policies: -All students need to have either printable or physical versions of the manipulatives needed for class to fully participate. -I prefer videos on and students are often able to tilt their screens to show what they are working on at their tables. -I prefer students stay unmuted to help with participation, but sometimes, due to background noise or static from a connection, I may need to mute students. -I am happy to share recordings for missed classes. -The students and I try very hard to create a supportive and respectful learning community. Specific plans for the first 4 weeks: Week of August 31st: Explore numbers 1-9 with Montessori beads Explore numbers 1-9 on a 10 frame September 7th: Building a bead stair Counting and adding within 10 using a 10 frame Week of September 14th: Fact families within 10 Counting and adding within 10 using Montessori beads Week of September 21st: Counting sets of pennies Solving addition and subtraction story problems on a 10 frame
學習目標
Students will manipulate numbers in many different ways to gain a strong understanding of place value and number sense. They will develop a beginning understanding of how place value can help us with mental math strategies.
Students will add and subtract small and larger numbers (with and without regrouping) using Montessori beads, counters, and ten/twenty frames.
