Hello learners and parents! In this ongoing guitar class we will focus on the style of playing known as flatpicking. Essentially this is simply playing melody notes rather than chords. We will not be covering chords in this class, however the chords will still be included on the tab/notation provided. This class is appropriate for beginners on guitar, though it is recommended that your learner have at least six months playing experience on the instrument before starting this class! The tune for each lesson will be posted in the classroom at least one week prior to the lesson. Included will be a slow-speed play-along audio recording, as well as written versions in both tablature (tab) and standard notation. To accommodate different skill levels, two versions of each tune will be provided: a super-simple, no-frills, basic version, and also a slightly more advanced version. It’s recommended that learners start with the basic version and shift to the second one when they are comfortable, but more advanced learners may choose to skip the first version entirely and focus on the second. During class learners will be encouraged to take turns playing the tune for the week, or else a tune of their choice if preferred. This is pressure-free class. There is no requirement to have a tune fully learned by class, or pressure to keep up with anyone else! The tunes taught in this class are flatpicking standards, drawn largely from the repertoires of Tony Rice and Doc Watson. I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!
Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.
I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
