Guided Test Prep is designed to assist students in reviewing pertinent reading skills that are found on state standardized yearly tests and to specifically increase their scores. During this seven-week course, students will be fully immersed and engaged in completing aligned and specific exercises that will be helpful in passing the reading portion of a standardized test. The course is driven by REVIEWING standard reading skills and strategies found on current reading assessments for elementary and middle school students and will be delivered by using a Power Point Presentation. Additionally, students will use a Texas STAAR Practice workbook which will provide the necessary exemplars for student practice. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` SOME READING SKILLS ADDRESSED: `GRAMMAR: `Mechanics & Parts of Speech `READING: `Drawing Conclusions `Evaluating Arguments `Citing Evidence `Text Organization/Structure `Word Recognition - context clues, multiple & technical meanings - connotative & denotation meanings ```````````````````````````````````````` COURSE AGENDA ```````````````````````````````````````` WEEK 1 FOCUS: chapter 2 - determining correct word usage multiple meanings, figures of speech context clues, roots, affixes, style & tone WEEK 2 FOCUS: chapter 2 - determining correct word usage subject & verb agreement, pronouns, adjectives & adverbs, mechanics WEEK 3 FOCUS: chapter 3 - comprehension skills - word knowledge technical meanings, connotative & denotative WEEK 4 FOCUS: chapter 3 - comprehension skills - word knowledge development of ideas, analyze people, places, things central ideas of text, summarize WEEK 5 FOCUS: chapter 3 - evaluating arguments, setting, analysis of key events, drawing conclusions WEEK 6 FOCUS: chapter 3 - textual evidence, author's purpose, point of view, figurative language chapter 4 - author's purpose & craft WEEK 7 FOCUS: chapter 5 - sentence variety, headings, descriptive details sensory language, revising, editing FOCUS: chapter 5 - descriptive details, sensory language, revise & edit chapter 6 - information from multiple sources

All students must have a working knowledge of basic Reading Skills such as main idea, details, cause & effect, context clues, drawing conclusions and inference. Additionally, students must be reading on or above their current grade level.

I have more than twenty-five years of teaching Language Arts ranging from Kindergarten to College level courses. A multiple of those years were spent with successfully helping students to achieve reading test scores in the 80% percentile or more on a consistent basis.
