If you teach a child one vocabulary word, he/she might remember that one word. If you teach a child a root word, the learner might be able to decipher the meanings of many more words. For example, if your student knows spec = to look, they might be able to determine the meanings of words like spectacles, spectacular, spectator, speculate, spectrum, and so on.
