Middle school math can be daunting for students and parents alike. Luckily, I'm on a mission to make middle school math MAKE SENSE to your child and to help your child have a little fun along the way. I enjoy building relationships with my students and use a multi-sensory approach in my lessons, teaching with a lot of hands-on and visual activities. Practice is necessary but shouldn't be boring, so I often use games and small group work (break out rooms) as ways for learners to gain confidence with new skills. Classkick and Google Jamboard will be used in some classes as a way for students to independently or collaboratively practice a skill and allow me to provide students with feedback. Blooket and Gimkit will be used in some classes to play games to practice new skills. None of these programs require a log in, student account, or email address. This ongoing class is designed to cover all the standards/skills in the 6th grade math curriculum (as laid out by Common Core State Standards) in 39 lessons. While using CCSS as a guide to make the course more universal, the class will focus on the standards, not necessarily the strategies (unless they are helpful in building a conceptual understanding of the skill). Each class will focus on a specific skill and learners will be provided with follow up materials (worksheets or online resources) for extra practice. I am happy to provide feedback for follow up assignments but due to the drop-in nature of ongoing classes, questions will need to be addressed through learner messages, not in the next class. There will be no formal assessments/grades given. Parents should determine mastery based on how students do with their independent work/follow up assignments. Class materials will be created by me or copyrighted materials which I have permission to share. This is a great course for students that work well at an accelerated pace. If you have a question about whether your child is ready for a specific skill, please message me to ask what the pre-requisite knowledge is as there will not be time to do an in-depth review the fifth grade standards. The course is split into four quarters with breaks around major U.S. holidays (Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas). Below is the schedule of skills to be taught. Throughout the course there will be opportunities for your child to take other classes that teach/review pre-requisite skills related to the skill for the week. These will be marked with asterisks (*) and listed below the 6th grade schedule of skills for each quarter. *Students should have mastered 5th grade computation skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers) before the full curriculum course starts as this will be reviewed but not retaught in the 6th grade curriculum* QUARTER 1 – Place Value & Number Operations – 8 weeks* Week of Aug. 26 – Lesson 1: Understand Ratios Week of Sept. 2 – Lesson 2: Generate Equivalent Ratios & Graphing Ratios Week of Sept. 9 – Lesson 3: Compare Ratios Week of Sept. 16 – Lesson 4: Understand Rates & Unit Rates Week of Sept. 23 – Lesson 5: Compare Unit Rates & Solve Unit Rate Problems Week of Sept. 30 – Lesson 6: Convert Units of Measurement (Customary & Metric) Week of Oct. 7 – Lesson 7: Decimal Operations Week of Oct. 14 – Lesson 8: Fractions Operations QUARTER 2 – Percents & Rational Numbers – 8 weeks Week of Oct. 21 – Lesson 9: Understand Percent Week of Oct. 28 – Lesson 10: Relate Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Week of Nov. 4 – Lesson 11: Represent Percents Greater than 100 or Less than 1 Week of Nov. 11 – Lesson 12: Estimate & Find Percent of a Number Week of Nov. 18 – Lesson 13: Estimate & Find the Whole (Given a Part and the Percent) Week of Nov. 25 – NO CLASS Week of Dec. 2 – Lesson 14: Understand Integers Week of Dec. 9 – Lesson 15: Represent Rational Numbers on the Number Line & Absolute Value Week of Dec. 16 – Lessons 16 & 17: Represent Rational Numbers on a Coordinate Plane & Find Distance & Represent Polygons on a Coordinate Plane Week of Dec. 23 – NO CLASS / WINTER BREAK - Check out one of my Winter/Christmas escape rooms! Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and four years on Outschool have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.
