Fifth grade math can be daunting for students and parents alike. Luckily, I'm on a mission to make 5th grade math MAKE SENSE to your child and to help your child have a little fun along the way. I enjoy building relationships with my students and use a multi-sensory approach in my lessons, teaching with a lot of hands-on and visual activities. Practice is necessary but shouldn't be boring, so I often use games and small group work (break out rooms) as ways for learners to gain confidence with new skills. Classkick and Google Jamboard will be used in some classes as a way for students to independently or collaboratively practice a skill and allow me to provide students with feedback. Blooket will be used in some classes to play games to practice new skills. None of these programs require a log in, student account, or email address.

This fast-paced ongoing class is designed to cover all the standards/skills in the 5th grade math curriculum (as laid out by Common Core State Standards). While using CCSS as a guide to make the course more universal, the class will focus on the standards, not necessarily the strategies (unless they are helpful in building a conceptual understanding of the skill). Each class will focus on a specific skill and learners will be provided with follow up materials (worksheets or online resources) for extra practice. I am happy to provide feedback for follow up assignments but due to the drop-in nature of ongoing classes, questions will need to be addressed through learner messages, not in the next class. There will be no formal assessments/grades given. Parents should determine mastery based on how students do with their independent work/follow up assignments. Class materials will be created by me or copyrighted materials which I have permission to share.

If you have a question about whether your child is ready for a specific skill, please message me to ask what the pre-requisite knowledge is as there will not be time to do an in-depth review the fourth grade standards.

馬裡蘭州 教學證書 在 小學教育
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
