In this class, students will study citizenship and government within the United States. Learners will explore the history and inner workings of the United States government. Learners will also begin to compare our government with others using primary and secondary resources. Also, students will explore elections, citizenship, and civil rights. This class will use assigned readings, historical sources, and current events to provide context for the subject. The live class will draw on these sources for a discussion. Course Outline: Week One: Introduction and Foundations of Government Week Two: Beginnings of Government in the United States Week Three: The Constitution Week Four: The Legislative Branch Week Five: Discussions and Projects Week Six: The Executive Branch - The Presidency and Vice Presidency Week Seven: The Executive Branch at Work Week Eight: The Judicial Branch Week Nine: Protecting Civil Liberties Week Ten: Citizenship and Civil Rights Week Eleven: Discussions and Projects Week Twelve: Government by the People Week Thirteen: Elections Week Fourteen: Government and the Economy Week Sixteen: Wrap-Up and Projects Students will receive assignments each week. The assignments will generally consist of three-five short assignments that include readings, short answer questions, fill-in-the-blank, and option response questions. Learners will also complete three projects over the course of the semester. The project topics include - the Constitution, Landmark Supreme Court Cases, and Elections. Learners will be given several weeks to complete the project and if they choose, can present the project in class or can share the project with their classmates by posting.
