課堂經歷
Hello brand new musicians! In this series of beginner fiddle/violin classes I’ll be covering all the basics you’ll need to get started on your new instrument! This class is intended for absolute beginners with no prior musical experience, however, if you’ve had your instrument a little while and have been trying to learn some on your own or have even taken a few lessons already that’s ok too! We will start by covering basic set-up (as needed), such as bridge and string adjustments. Next we will go over instrument care, string names and tuning (having a tuning device or app is highly recommended but not required!). As time allows in the first class we will talk about placing fret line markers on your instrument to help with finger placement (Having adult help with this part is usually best for very young learners). By the second class we will be ready to learn about bow hold, posture, learn at least a few first notes and a simple tune or two. In the third and final class we will pick up where we left off with the previous class, learning at least another tune or two. (I teach according to correct note names, either by ear or through standard notation, not by tab/fret numbers). This class is just the beginning of your learner’s fiddle/violin journey! If your learner is interested in continuing classes with me please see my regular 1:1 class listing: https://outschool.com/classes/11-fiddleviolin-mandolin-lessons-bluegrass-old-time-celtic-FLfEaZlL?usid=0UuhWEjL&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!
Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.
I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
