This class focuses on developing phonemic awareness, a crucial skill for learning to read in alphabetic writing systems like English, where letters represent phonemes or sounds. Phonemic awareness is a prerequisite for phonics, the next step in reading, as it helps learners connect sounds with their corresponding written symbols and blend them to form words. Learners will practice hearing and saying the different English phonemes to help them prepare for the next step of reading.
My degree is in Childhood Education and I taught first-grade in public school. I also have a four-year-old son and have been working on these skills with him.
If there is time, learners may be asked to quickly find something that has a sound we are working on. They should also bring paper and a pencil to class or a dry erase board and marker.
