Lesson 1
Chapters 1-3
This session will include the following activities: author study, discussion of the novel study, explanation of basic routines (vocabulary, fluency, content and discussion questions, cross-curricular opportunities, etc.), pre-reading activities, and reading the initial passage of the book together.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Chapters 4-7
This session will include the following activities: general discussion of students’ thoughts on the prior reading assignment, vocabulary activities, fluency discussion, content and discussion questions, sharing/discussion of prior cross-curricular assignment, beginning the new reading passage together.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Chapters 8-11
This session will include the following activities: general discussion of students’ thoughts on the prior reading assignment, vocabulary activities, fluency discussion, content and discussion questions, sharing/discussion of prior cross-curricular assignment, beginning the new reading passage together. During this session, we will look over the eight options for the culminating projects that will be shared in the final session.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Chapters 12-14
This session will include the following activities: general discussion of students’ thoughts on the prior reading assignment, vocabulary activities, fluency discussion, content and discussion questions, sharing/discussion of prior cross-curricular assignment, beginning the new reading passage together. We will also have a check-in discussion to see how culminating projects are going.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Chapters 15-18
This session will include the following activities: general discussion of students’ thoughts on the prior reading assignment, vocabulary activities, fluency discussion, content and discussion questions, sharing/discussion of prior cross-curricular assignment, beginning the new reading passage together. We will also have a check-in discussion to see how culminating projects are going.

Culminating Project
This session will include culminating project presentations and final discussions.
  • Students will enjoy the process of reading, gain new vocabulary, improve fluency, and be able to discuss their insights and opinions of the material.

When I was growing up, we traveled a lot, and I always looked forward to a new trip because my mother would buy a new stack of books for me.  I would sit for hours in the back seat of our car and read.  Whenever I ran out of books to read, I would read the billboards and every highway sign very loudly.   That was rather tedious for my parents, so I'm sure that's why they always made sure I had plenty of books to read!

Combine my love of reading with my experience as a reading teacher and my masters in Curriculum and Instruction, and I believe you'll find that I'm prepared and pumped-up to help your student's reading experience be the best it can be!

細節: Students will read weekly passages from our text, learn and practice new vocabulary (via Quizlet - free) , improve fluency through practice (optional), and respond to content questions. There will be a culminating assignment due in the tenth session, and students can work toward that at their own paces.

細節: Informal assessments will take place throughout each lesson via discussions and sharing of information from assignments.
Students will need the novel, paper, writing utensils, and/or the ability to create documents via computer.
