TOPICS COVERED: Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Anthropology, Evolution, Astrophysics The aim of my "Fun Philosophy" series of classes is to discuss the most interesting topics in Philosophy, because if we enjoy our first experiences of thinking, then this encourages kids to keep going (see my other class listing for examples). To think and learn without realising it, because you are having fun! Students will be come aware of the debates surrounding the evolution of life and civilizations, and the difficulties of space travel.
I have a PhD in Philosophy and have taught this class many times - it's one of my favourites and all my students have really enjoyed it too.
This class may discuss that we are alone in the Universe and how temporary our civilization may be and that we may destroy ourselves before we ever create a civilization in space that can be detectable. This is done in a light hearted way where I explain that this is very unlikely, but more sensitive students may find these topics upsetting and if anyone appears upset they will be offered the opportunity to leave the class early with a full refund. Also parents will be contacted to let them know.
