Welcome to one of many courses in number theory and the history of mathematics! Arithmetic evolved through time not only from the base-10 number systems we know and use today but as well from those of the Egyptians, the Romans, the Chinese, and many other cultures. This course will help students appreciate the historical journey of counting and calculating numbers in these many contexts and open the door for them to other exciting subjects in number theory in mathematics. It will also provide insight into the world we live in today, where base-10 may be dominant but others (such as base-2 and base-16) are more so in fields like computer programming. This course is aimed at providing students the opportunity to exercise both critical thinking and historical appreciation, all while comprehending the mechanics of these mathematics. The only prerequisites to taking this course (other than the recommended "Day 0: Counting and Numbers in Other Bases") are a knowledge of the following: - Basic arithmetic (namely addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) - Familiarity with exponents or powers (e.g. squared numbers, cubed numbers, etc.) - A love of numbers and how they work - An interest in history, other cultures, and how mathematicians think about numbers in all their variety Progress is evaluated through short homework assignments completed outside class (some with interesting videos with additional information) and in-class problems and puzzles. Here is what we will be studying: Starting with the origins of our own base-10 number system on "Day 0," we will begin our journey with entertaining the idea of other bases and practicing some basic calculations in them. Moving forward, we'll continue exploring the exciting history and uses of systems in other bases from ancient cultures as diverse as Egyptian, Roman, and Chinese (Day 1-5). We will then conclude our series with basic binary and base-16 from computer programming (Day 6) and the important history of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system we use today (Day 7). So if you love learning world history or simply want to explore all the many ways numbers have been (and still are) counted and calculated throughout time, this is the course for you. I look forward to seeing you in class! Note: A minimum of four (4) students must be enrolled for this class to be held as scheduled. Students who wish to remain enrolled even in the case of there not being a sufficient number of enrollees will be transferred to the next available scheduled day and time of the same class. Still got questions? Feel free to contact me for more information!
學習目標
Students will cultivate a knowledge of past and present uses of number systems beyond our everyday base-10 system.
Students will learn about the birth of these number systems, the different purposes and cultures around their use, and how to use them in different arenas of mathematics today.

Adventures in Number Theory: Counting and Numbers in Other Bases
Did you know that not everyone uses the 10 digits that we do and take for granted? Let's take a look at how number systems in other bases work so we can count and calculate numbers like a Babylonian, a computer, or (maybe?) a panda!

課 2:
Egyptian Hieroglyphics: No Value of Places
How did Egyptians represent numbers? What do we have that they didn’t? How did they construct large numbers? How did they subtract numbers or calculate fractions?

課 3:
Babylonian Cuneiform: A Better Trigonometry
What was different about how place value was represented? What did they use in place of zero? Why do some believe that trigonometry would be easier if we used a base system like the one the Babylonians did?

課 4:
Roman Numerals: More than Just Sundials
How were Roman numerals similar to Egyptian numerals? What was unique in the addition and subtraction properties used to determine a number’s value? What other
conventions were used for very large numbers? Why do we still see these numbers on clocks and other places today?

父母的引導和規範
These classes are offered in the spirit of self-directed, interest-based learning of the student. In the interest of promoting creativity and critical thinking under optimal conditions, I highly recommend researching the philosophy of unschooling for further description of the sort of student who will best benefit from this content.
供應清單
A 7-page course overview handout is provided upon enrollment that includes a course description and outline, information about the teacher, resources for further reference, and an optional video intro (by TED Ed) so you can get started right away.

Mr. Kelsey is a professional math, philosophy, logic, and language tutor, writer, and super-learning advocate. He is certified through the Praxis II (5161) exam to teach high school mathematics (pre-algebra through calculus), but his range of subjects has included ACT/SAT test prep, college-level mathematics, science, logic, foreign languages, and philosophy.
As of December 2024, Kelsey has taught over 1400 learners on top of 3+ years of experience teaching in the classroom and private tutoring. This background, coupled with a bent for lifelong learning, has given him a knack for finding and rounding out students' weak spots and boosting their confidence in themselves. I've helped many students find the joy in learning math, language, and philosophy by helping them "crack the code" and dissolve the illusion so often impressed on us that everything about these subjects is difficult, complicated, or even impenetrable. It's not.
