What is competency to stand trial? Competency refers to the concept that in order for a fair trial in the U.S. an individual must have the mental capacity to understand what is presently happening to them. In this one-time class, students will be introduced to the world of forensic psychology in relation to competency evaluations. During this lecture based course, we will discuss how this issue is raised and determined as well as what occurs when an individual is determined to be incompetent to stand trial.

父母的引導和規範
Course mentions violent crime, mental illness, and secure psychiatric facilities which may be disturbing to some students. It is not suitable for students under 17 as we will be talking about psychotic disorders (hallucinations and delusions). Violent crime will be mentioned; however, the class primarily focuses on the legal and mental health systems. Discussions of dangerousness and mandatory treatment for those who are incompetent will also be present. Please reach out if you have questions about content. I am more than happy to provide more details.
